The Park Bench Rant: Capsize
And when I turned 18,
I worked my last summer away
For our castle in the ghetto,
Our beautiful dream.
And I threw bank statement after hospital bill,
Double fisted straight into the wastebasket.
Oh, they piled high.
The velocity of money indeed,
Whistling right out of my pocket
And straight into the street.
Oh, what a terrible joke,
When we traded the summer
Of the rest of our lives
For the wonderful yoke
Of washing our own clothes.
Would you think me trite
If I wished that we were there tonight?
I can feel the texture of the carpet
In that one bedroom apartment,
Where I was sure
I would wake up on the morning that I died.
And some of these darker bits have come to light.
If you buried me tonight,
Would you remember my name?
Like Alsalce Lorraine?
All those Germans,
All those Frenchmen,
They died in that fire.
What fire? Okay.
Would you think me wrong
If I kept our dream alive,
In the flutter of your sleeping eyes?
And maybe our ship will quit listing to portside,
Heading for a capsize,
But tonight, I seriously doubted it.
